There was a shooting at school № 88 in Izhevsk. One of the guards was killed, there are also victims among children, said the head of Udmurtia Alexander Brechalov. The attacker himself shot himself. He made no demands. According to Kommersant, four to five people were killed. The death toll may rise as the victims were seriously injured.
Alexander Brechalov said that special services and an ambulance were working at the site. “So far, an unidentified man broke into the school, killed a security guard… There are casualties among children and wounded,” he said in a Telegram video message. He clarified that the evacuation of the building is almost over.
School № 88 is located in the center of Izhevsk, not far from the city administration building. The school has 982 students and employs 80 teachers.
The Udmurtian Investigative Committee launched criminal proceedings under part 2 of Article 105 of the Criminal Code (murder of two or more people by public danger) and Article 222 of the Criminal Code (illegal trafficking of weapons). Chairman of the Investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin ordered to send investigators and forensic experts from the committee’s central office to the scene, Kommersant found out.
“Govorit Moskva” reports that ten people were injured. The area of the educational institution is cordoned off; Rosgvardia and FSB are working at the site, among others. The Ministry of Education also sent a group of specialists to Izhevsk.
Incidents of shootings at educational institutions in Russia have become more frequent over the past two years. On May 11, 2021, nine people, including seven children, became victims of shootings in a Kazan secondary school. On September 20, there was a shooting at Perm State University, killing six people and injuring 47. The Ministry of Education proposed equating attacks on schools with terrorist attacks.
